Google AI Search Is Starting to Send Clicks Back
We have written twice recently about AI changing how Google works. First, that AI summaries were replacing clicks. Then, that Google's AI was starting to do things on behalf of searchers, like booking restaurant tables.
Both posts painted a worrying picture for small businesses. AI is answering questions without sending people to your website. The click is disappearing.
Yesterday, Google changed direction. Not completely, but meaningfully.
What Google just did
On 6 May, Google announced five updates to how AI Mode and AI Overviews handle links. The short version: they are making it significantly easier to click through to the websites behind AI-generated answers.
Here is what changed.
Links now sit next to the text, not buried at the bottom. Previously, when Google's AI summarised information from your website, the link to your site was tucked away in a footnote section. Now, links appear inline, right next to the sentence that references your content. If Google's AI mentions your plumbing guide while answering a question about boiler pressure, the link to your guide sits right there in the paragraph.
Hovering over a link shows a preview. On desktop, moving your cursor over an inline link now shows the website name and page title. Google's own testing found that people hesitate to click links when they do not know where they lead. The preview removes that hesitation.
Forum posts and social media get proper attribution. When AI responses cite real experiences from forums, social media, or community discussions, they now show the creator's name, handle, or community name. If someone recommended your business on a local subreddit and Google's AI picks that up, their name and the subreddit are visible in the response.
There is a new "Further Exploration" section. At the bottom of many AI responses, Google now shows curated links to in-depth articles and analyses related to the query. This is designed to turn the AI answer into a starting point, not a dead end.
Subscribed sources get highlighted. If someone subscribes to a news outlet or follows a website, links from those sources get a visible label in AI responses. Early testing showed that people were significantly more likely to click labelled links.
Why this is happening now
This is not generosity. Google is under serious pressure.
An Ahrefs study from February 2026 found that AI Overviews caused a 58% drop in click-through rates for top-ranking pages. The Pew Research Centre found that only 8% of users click on traditional search results when an AI Overview is present, compared to 15% without one.
Publishers noticed. The European Publishers Council filed an antitrust complaint with the European Commission. Penske Media filed a lawsuit. The EU opened a formal investigation into whether Google is cannibalising the web content its business depends on.
Google's response is these five updates. Whether you see it as a genuine course correction or a strategic move ahead of regulatory action, the practical effect is the same: AI search results are about to link to websites more prominently and more often.
What this means for your business
If you run a local business, this shift matters more than you might think. Here is the key insight: AI search is not just linking to the biggest brands. It is linking to whatever content answers the question best.
The data backs this up. A March 2026 study found that branded queries with AI Overviews actually see an 18% increase in click-through rates. When Google's AI cites your business by name, people are more likely to click through, not less.
The catch is getting cited in the first place. And that comes down to whether your website has content worth citing.
How to be the site that gets the link
The advice in our earlier post about AI search still applies. Clear, specific, structured content is the foundation. But these new updates add a few things worth doing.
Answer specific questions on your website. Google's AI is pulling from pages that answer questions directly. If you are a roofer in Manchester, a page that answers "how much does a flat roof replacement cost in Manchester" with real pricing ranges and timeframes is exactly the kind of content that gets an inline link in an AI response. A generic "our services" page is not.
Make your page titles clear and descriptive. The new hover preview shows your page title to users before they click. "Flat Roof Replacement Costs, Manchester - Smith Roofing" is going to get more clicks than "Services - Our Company." This has always been good practice. Now it directly affects whether someone clicks through from an AI answer.
Keep building your presence in real conversations. The social perspectives feature means that genuine mentions of your business on forums, social media, and community sites can now appear inside AI responses with attribution. A recommendation on a local Facebook group, a positive mention on Reddit, a reply in a trade forum. These are no longer just word-of-mouth. They are potential citations in Google's AI answers.
We wrote about Reddit becoming part of your search presence a couple of weeks ago. That is now doubly true. Reddit and forum mentions are not just showing up in regular search results any more. They are being quoted directly inside AI-generated answers, with the community name attached.
Keep your Google Business Profile active. The inline link updates work alongside the local search changes Google made earlier this year. An active profile with recent photos, responded reviews, and current information makes your business more likely to be referenced in AI responses for local queries.
The bigger picture
For the past year, the story of AI search has been about losing clicks. That story is not over. AI Overviews still suppress traffic for many queries, and zero-click searches continue to rise.
But the balance is shifting. Google is under enough pressure, legal and commercial, to start sending traffic back. And the businesses that benefit most will be the ones that have been doing the right things all along: clear content, specific answers, real proof, active profiles.
